Southend Airport (SEN) is in Essex, east of London. It has a railway station beside the terminal, but the total journey from London depends on your accommodation and the connections you need.
Here are the transport options from central London, including fares, journey times and overnight planning.
1. Train: Greater Anglia
Greater Anglia trains towards Southend Victoria connect London Liverpool Street and Stratford with Southend Airport. Check that your train calls there and get off at the airport station: Southend Victoria and Southend Central are different stations, not the terminal. From Southend Airport station, walk to the passenger terminal.
- Journey time: Around 53 minutes from Liverpool Street and 45 minutes from Stratford as a guide, depending on the service. Add travel to the station, waiting and the walk to check-in.
- Fare: Use contactless to Southend Airport or buy a valid rail ticket. Oyster is not valid to the airport. Check your starting station and travel time with Greater Anglia and compare with advance tickets or applicable discounts; there is no single fare for every traveller.
- Frequency: Check departures from Liverpool Street or Stratford for your date. These vary with the time, day and engineering work; a reference frequency is not a guaranteed maximum wait.
- Operating hours: Check the first and last train for your date and direction. This is not a continuous 24-hour connection, and Sundays may require different planning. See the airport’s official rail information.
When it makes sense: Travel directly from Liverpool Street. Near Stratford, compare boarding there rather than heading into central London. With Elizabeth line, check Greater Anglia connections at Liverpool Street, Stratford or Shenfield; Elizabeth line does not reach Southend Airport.
2. Buses and regional connections
The airport’s current information does not support a direct National Express transfer from Victoria or Stratford every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day. Do not plan your flight around this without finding a bookable departure to Southend Airport, rather than just Southend town.
The airport lists regional connections such as the X30, linking the Southend area with Chelmsford and Stansted. Check that your specific departure calls at the terminal: not every X30 journey does. These routes are not equivalent to a direct coach from central London.
- Journey time: Calculate the entire itinerary from your starting point, including connections. Do not assume a direct London–airport coach takes an hour and a half without checking the route.
- Fare: Check the actual route and departure with its operator, including any connecting journeys. The old £10 minimum is not confirmed as the fare for a direct transfer from London.
- Frequency: Check the Southend Airport stop in the operator’s timetable; serving the town alone is not enough.
- Operating hours: Check connections on the airport website and the First Bus timetable. A connection throughout the night is not guaranteed.
Before choosing a bus: Compare all connections, total cost and arrival time with the direct train. An apparently cheaper fare may not be worthwhile if it only reaches a town station and you still need transport to the terminal.
3. Taxis and private transfers
Taxis and private transport services such as Uber or Bolt can be practical for comfort and flexibility, particularly with lots of luggage or a group.
- Journey time: An hour and a half may guide some journeys, but this varies with the pickup address and traffic. Request an estimate from your accommodation and allow extra time.
- Fare: Request a quote for your address, date, passenger numbers and luggage. Confirm whether airport access, pickup and other supplements are included. Do not assume immediate availability or a fixed £80–£100 fare on every app.
4. Driving or hiring a car
Southend Airport offers short- and long-stay parking. Compare the total for your dates, distance to the terminal and booking conditions. For drop-offs and pickups, check authorised areas and current charges. If returning a hire car, allow time for that before check-in too.
5. Overnight transport options
For an early flight or late arrival, check first or last trains and engineering work for your date before booking transport. Do not rely on a direct 24-hour National Express connection without a confirmed departure. If trains do not fit, compare a pre-booked transfer or staying near the airport.
The terminal is not open 24 hours. The airport says it opens from three hours before the first scheduled departure and according to departure times during the day. Confirm the arrangements for your flight before arriving overnight.
- Night-time planning: Work backwards from the time you need to reach check-in and verify an actual complete itinerary from your accommodation, including terminal opening times.
Which option is best?
Near Liverpool Street or Stratford, first check Greater Anglia to Southend Airport. Elsewhere, compare travel to those stations with a pre-booked transfer or driving, including all costs. Overnight, choose according to actual transport and terminal opening hours rather than an assumed continuous coach service.
Tickets and stations: three mistakes to avoid
- Southend Airport is not Southend Central or Southend Victoria: c2c trains to Southend Central do not reach the terminal. That route requires another connection. Compare the extra time with a train calling at Southend Airport.
- Contactless and Oyster have different coverage: Use a valid ticket or contactless to reach the airport. If finishing an Oyster leg and changing payment method, correctly end that journey before starting the next. With contactless, use the same card or device to touch in and out.
- Bank card or discounted ticket: Compare the total when travelling with children, in a group or with a Railcard; do not assume card payment applies those discounts. If you already have a ticket, use it at the barriers rather than starting another journey with your bank card.
