It is nearby, served by three lines and even has a pedestrian tunnel towards the museums. The problem, if you need to avoid stairs, is that there is no step-free route from the train to the street.

It is not the only station where you need to look beyond the distance to your destination. In London, having a lift does not necessarily mean you can board the train without help: the lift may take you to the platform, but a step or gap between it and the carriage can still require a ramp.

To find a route that works for you, check where you enter, how you board, where you change lines and how you leave the station. Here are three journeys that show why those details matter.

What the wheelchair symbol tells you

On TfL’s standard map, a white wheelchair symbol means step-free access from street to platform; a blue symbol means step-free access from street to train. With the first, you may need a ramp to board and leave the train. Even at some platforms marked with the second, mini ramps are available to bridge a small remaining gap.

Do not take the symbol as a guarantee for the whole station. Different interchanges can have different access arrangements, and the entrance you need may be on another street. TfL’s accessibility guides provide station-specific details. Its ramps page explains how to ask for boarding assistance.

Travelling with a suitcase also involves different needs from travelling in a wheelchair you must remain seated in. With luggage, you might be able to use stairs even if you would rather avoid them. With a pushchair, whether you can fold it depends on whether you are travelling alone, what else you are carrying and how you can look after your child. If you need a fully step-free journey, keep that requirement in your search even if the route takes longer.

Finding a route before you set off

Enter your hotel’s address or the place you want to visit in TfL’s journey planner. Searching only for the station may hide an unsuitable final stretch.

Under accessibility options, Full step-free access searches for a complete step-free route. Step-free to platform only stops at the platform. Another option lets you use escalators rather than stairs: that is not the same as a route using lifts.

Compare changes and walking distances as well as the overall journey time. For someone with reduced mobility, avoiding a change may matter more than saving a few minutes on the train; for someone else, the outdoor section may be the difficulty. Check your return journey too, and save an alternative in case a lift you need is unavailable.

From Heathrow to a hotel near Paddington

If you are staying near Paddington, the Elizabeth line offers a straightforward option to consider: travelling from Heathrow without changing trains. TfL states that both ends of this journey have step-free access between the street and Elizabeth line trains. See its information about travelling from Heathrow.

You still need to work out how to reach the hotel. Which exit leaves you best placed? Does your accommodation have an accessible entrance? Is the distance from the station manageable for you? “Near Paddington” does not answer those questions on its own.

Before adding another Tube journey to get a little closer, compare the effort of changing with that of leaving the station. If you do continue on another line, check that interchange separately: the Elizabeth line’s access arrangements do not automatically apply to every platform at Paddington.

Our Heathrow guide covers the other transport options so you can assess which suits your accommodation.

London Bridge to Westminster: find the Jubilee line entrance

You can take the Jubilee line from London Bridge to Westminster without changing, travelling westbound towards Stanmore. At London Bridge, however, it is worth finding the right entrance before heading down into the station.

The station index in TfL’s step-free guide identifies Duke Street Hill/Tooley Street as the step-free entrance for the Jubilee line. For the Northern line, it specifies Borough High Street. If you arrive on the Northern line and need the accessible interchange to Jubilee, it involves around 410 metres via the street and lifts.

Using the first Underground entrance you see can therefore mean a detour. Changing between two lines at the same station does not always mean staying underground.

At Westminster, the guide distinguishes the Jubilee line’s access arrangements from those of the Circle and District lines. It lists mini-ramp availability for Jubilee. If you need one, speak to staff before boarding so they can also arrange help when you get off.

This is why it helps to check access for the particular line, rather than simply whether the station has a lift. The stops are listed on the official Jubilee line route.

For South Kensington’s museums, do not choose by distance alone

Back to the Natural History Museum. Its travel information warns that South Kensington station is not step-free. Gloucester Road does not solve the problem either: it has a lift between the ticket hall and Piccadilly line platforms, but no complete step-free route through the station.

South Kensington’s pedestrian tunnel does not change that. An accessible section of the route to the museum does not mean you can reach it from the train without stairs.

Search for the museum itself in the planner and compare a surface route or a journey using another station. The right bus will depend on your starting point and direction of travel; there is no single route that works as an alternative from every origin.

The museum entrance matters too

According to the museum’s accessibility information, the Central Entrance on Cromwell Road has a steep ramp. The West Entrance on Queen’s Gate also has a ramp. The East Entrance on Exhibition Road is not described as step-free, although there is a lift from the entrance lobby to the galleries.

If slopes are difficult for you, ask the museum which entrance would suit you best. If you have a suitcase, note that large or wheeled suitcases cannot be taken around the building: they must be left in the cloakroom, subject to availability. It may be easier to leave your luggage before visiting; see our London luggage storage guide.

If you need help boarding

TfL offers Turn up and go on the Underground, London Overground and Elizabeth line: you can arrive at the station and ask for assistance. Staff can help you reach the platform and coordinate boarding, interchanges and arrival. Advance booking through Passenger Assist is also available on certain services.

Ask before heading to the platform, particularly if you need a ramp. If you cannot find staff, use a Help Point. You could say:

I need a step-free route to Westminster. Do I need a boarding ramp?

Replace Westminster with your destination and explain any other needs. Do not assume staff will be able to carry a suitcase or pushchair up stairs: check what help is available. TfL explains the service on its staff assistance page.

What if a lift is out of service?

Check service disruptions before leaving. If you arrive at an Underground, Elizabeth line or Overground station and cannot use a lift you need, speak to staff about another step-free route.

TfL’s policy on unavailable lifts provides for an accessible taxi at its expense where there is no reasonable alternative, subject to the conditions it describes. Ask staff to arrange it; do not book one yourself assuming you will be reimbursed.

Taking a pushchair on the bus instead

Have an alternative in mind before you reach the stairs. Relying on someone to help you carry the pushchair can leave you without an option you can manage yourself.

A bus can avoid the need to go down into the Underground, but wheelchair and mobility aid users have priority in the designated space. TfL says sharing it with a pushchair depends on the available room, the driver’s assessment and the wheelchair user’s agreement. You will not always be able to board with your pushchair unfolded. See its information about help on board.

For ages, tickets and discounts, see our guide to travelling with children. Here, the issue is access: a child may travel free while the chosen route is still unsuitable for their pushchair.

Before setting off, check three things: the entrance you will use, how you will get from platform to train, and the way out to your destination. These are the points where an apparently straightforward journey can become difficult.

Official sources checked on 15 October 2026. The examples are based on documentation from TfL and the Natural History Museum, not on journeys tested in person. Check for disruptions on your travel date.

Step-free travel on the London Underground: station entrances, boarding assistance and practical examples for wheelchair users, pushchairs and luggage.

[129

post-2095","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-guide
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
