They are not always an alternative card to Oyster: you can load a Travelcard onto an Oyster and use the same card for both the pass and pay as you go credit.

They include the Underground, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and National Rail services within the zones covered, subject to their conditions. They also cover TfL buses across the network, even when travelling through other zones. For trams, your Travelcard must include at least one of Zones 3, 4, 5 or 6. Heathrow Express and Southeastern high-speed services are not included in the zonal Travelcard described here.

Travelcards are available for one day, seven days, a month or a year, as well as certain intermediate periods. A Day Travelcard is sold on paper. Passes for seven days or longer that are valid only within London’s fare zones are loaded onto Oyster or a train operator’s smartcard; do not expect a paper version simply because you buy online.

Children under 11 can travel free on the Underground, DLR, Overground and Elizabeth line with an adult holding a valid ticket, subject to TfL’s conditions; for children aged 5–10, the general limit is four per adult. Under-11s travel free on TfL buses and trams. Do not automatically apply that rule to every National Rail train: see our guide to travelling with children.

Adult and child fares are available, along with discounts subject to eligibility. A child-rate paper Day Travelcard does not require an 11–15 Oyster photocard for use on TfL services that accept it. Other passes or discounts may require a photograph or identification; check the specific product rather than assuming no Travelcard needs ID.

Where to Get Your TravelCard

It depends on the format and duration:

Paper Day Travelcard: at ticket machines in Underground, DLR, Overground, Elizabeth line and National Rail stations, and railway ticket offices that sell it.

Travelcard on Oyster: at authorised machines and outlets, Oyster Ticket Stops and Visitor Centres; TfL also offers purchases through TfL Go and its online account, subject to each channel’s conditions.

Buying before your trip: check the Visitor Shop and VisitBritain Shop. Check availability, delivery and dates before paying; a product appearing on a website does not guarantee it can be bought at that moment.

If ordering by post, check that it can arrive before your trip. You can also buy available tickets on arrival. Not every Underground station has a ticket office: use the machines or ask staff for help.

Types of TravelCard

There are several types of Travelcard:

Anytime Day Travelcard: travel at any time on the stated date and make journeys starting before 04:30 the following day, within its coverage. The usual daily combinations are Zones 1–4, 1–6 and 1–9; there is no Day Travelcard exclusively for Zones 1–2. For Watford Junction or other additional destinations, check the specific ticket.

Off-Peak Day Travelcard: use from 09:30 Monday to Friday and at any time on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, on the stated date and for journeys starting before 04:30 the following day. It is available for Zones 1–6 or 1–9. The afternoon pay as you go peak period does not prevent you using this Day Travelcard after 09:30.

7 Day Travelcard: covers seven consecutive days from your chosen start date, at any time within its coverage. It can start on any day of the week, unlike the pay as you go weekly cap, which runs Monday to Sunday.

Monthly and Annual Travelcards: allow unlimited travel for a month or a year, suitable for residents and longer stays.

If you buy a seven-day Travelcard through TfL, it is loaded onto a compatible Oyster card. Other sales channels may use the train operator’s smartcard. Oyster is the card; Travelcard is the pass it holds.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

If your route goes beyond your Travelcard’s zones, you must pay for the extra section using a valid method. With a Travelcard on Oyster, you can combine the pass with pay as you go credit where accepted; with other formats, check which extension or Boundary Zone ticket you need before travelling. It is not an automatic fine, but travelling without valid coverage can lead to a penalty. Oyster is not accepted at every station either.

Seven-day Travelcards cover consecutive days.

If you need a new standard Oyster to hold the pass, add its non-refundable £10.50 fee to your budget: this is not a £5 deposit or travel credit. If you already have a compatible Oyster, you do not pay that cost again. A Day Travelcard is sold on paper; for eligible journeys, compare its price with Oyster or contactless daily caps, including the cost of buying a card if necessary.

Your Travelcard is valid for the dates specified when you buy it. Do not assume it can be activated whenever you choose.

Do not assume a Travelcard can be lent to someone else because you cannot see a printed name. An Oyster holding a Travelcard cannot be lent. For other formats, check the issuer’s conditions; each passenger needs their own valid ticket.

Key Benefits of TravelCards

Savings: it may pay off if you make many journeys within the same zones and dates. Compare it with pay as you go, discounts and the card’s cost.

Flexibility: unlimited journeys within your chosen zones.

Convenience: no need to buy individual tickets.

Prices

Reference adult fares for 2026, checked on 16 October. Columns show the zones you need; daily passes may require you to buy wider coverage.

Travelcard type

You need Zones 1–2

You need Zones 1–4

You need Zones 1–6

Anytime Day

£16.60 · covers 1–4

£16.60 · covers 1–4

£23.60 · covers 1–6

Off-Peak Day

£16.60 · covers 1–6

£16.60 · covers 1–6

£16.60 · covers 1–6

7 Day

£44.70

£64.20

£81.60

Monthly

£171.70

£246.60

£313.40

Annual

£1,788

£2,568

£3,264

Source: TfL’s official adult fares table. Buying a new Oyster is not included. Other zone combinations and discounts are available; check the fare for your trip.

An example to help you choose, beyond a price list

An adult travels from Thursday to Wednesday, seven consecutive days, reaching the Zones 1–2 daily cap of £8.90 every day. That is 7 × £8.90 = £62.30 in pay as you go fares. The week is split into four days up to Sunday and three from Monday: neither block reaches the £44.70 weekly cap. A seven-day Zones 1–2 Travelcard costs £44.70, saving £17.60 on the journeys in this example.

If you need a new Oyster to hold it, the total becomes £55.20; compared with contactless with no bank charges, the saving would then be £7.10. If you already have Oyster, do not add that cost again. Fewer journeys, different zones or discounts change the result. The example excludes airports outside those zones and excluded services.

If those seven days ran from Monday to Sunday, the adult Zones 1–2 weekly cap would also be £44.70 for eligible journeys. Buying a Travelcard would not in itself reduce that maximum; pay as you go could even cost less if you travel less.

Usage

Check both the validity period and the services covered:

Travelcards allow unlimited travel on included Underground, bus, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and National Rail services. Zones apply to rail journeys; buses and trams follow the conditions explained at the start.

They are available for one day, seven days, a month or a year.

Validation of TravelCards

One-day paper Travelcards:

On the Underground and trains: insert the ticket into the gate slot where appropriate. If there is no gate or it is not working, keep your ticket and ask staff for instructions.

On buses: show the ticket to the driver when boarding.

Travelcards on Oyster (seven days or longer):

Touch the yellow reader when entering and leaving Underground and railway stations.

On buses, only touch in when boarding.

Recharge

Paper Travelcards cannot be topped up. Once expired, you need to buy a new one.

Travelcards on Oyster can be renewed or replaced with another compatible pass at authorised machines and outlets, Oyster Ticket Stops, through TfL Go or TfL’s online channels, depending on the product and requirements.

Not every station has a ticket office. If your pass is on another operator’s smartcard, follow that operator’s sales channels and instructions.

TravelCard vs Oyster Card

Feature

Travelcard

Oyster card

Flexibility

Limited to specific zones

Credit pays for journeys within the area accepting Oyster; it does not work at every station or on every service.

Duration

One day, seven days, a month or a year

Pay as you go credit does not expire; loaded passes have validity dates.

Capping

Fixed pass price for the dates and coverage purchased.

Daily and weekly capping

Best for

Frequent use within specific zones and dates, after comparing total cost.

Pay as you go or holding a Travelcard; contactless also offers pay as you go without buying Oyster.

Tips for Travelers

We discuss this topic in detail in our practical tips article; here is a summary.

Plan your zones: make sure your Travelcard covers every zone you need to visit.

Compare Oyster pay as you go and contactless: they may cost less for short stays or few journeys. Consider your bank’s charges and any discounts you can use.

Use applicable discounts: Uber Boat by Thames Clippers offers a reduction for certain TfL Travelcards on paper or Oyster, with exclusions. It does not include free boat travel or guarantee offers at every attraction; check the operator’s conditions and each promotion.

Children under 11: check the free travel and accompaniment conditions at the start of this guide. Do not buy a child Travelcard without first checking whether it is needed for the journey.

Travel beyond your zones: pay for the extra section with Oyster credit where valid, or the appropriate extension ticket for the format and route. Arrange this before travelling.

Start time: the Off-Peak Day Travelcard is valid from 09:30 on weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays. Anytime permits earlier travel on its date of validity.

Flexibility: Travelcards for seven days or longer allow travel at any time of day.

Keep your Travelcard in good condition: you need it to enter and leave the transport system.

Plan ahead: for seven days or more, compare a seven-day Travelcard with daily caps and the Monday-to-Sunday cap. Arriving on Thursday is not the same as starting a fare week on Monday; use this guide’s example with your own dates.

Combine with Oyster: you can hold a Travelcard and pay as you go credit on the same Oyster for occasional journeys beyond your usual zones.

Citations

Travelcard Image

Last updated: 16 October 2026

What is a TravelCard?
