It links the West End with residential areas and Heathrow Airport.<\/p>\n<p>It opened on 15 December 1906 between Finsbury Park and Hammersmith and was later extended north and west. Today it connects Cockfosters with the Heathrow and Uxbridge branches, passing through the West End and King\u2019s Cross St. Pancras.<\/p>\n<h3>Piccadilly line stations<\/h3>\n<p>The line has <strong>53 stations<\/strong>. Separate the shared section from the two western branches when reading the route. This list describes the network, rather than a promise that every train calls at every station.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Section between Cockfosters and Acton Town:<\/strong> Cockfosters, Oakwood, Southgate, Arnos Grove, Bounds Green, Wood Green, Turnpike Lane, Manor House, Finsbury Park, Arsenal, Holloway Road, Caledonian Road, King&#8217;s Cross St. Pancras, Russell Square, Holborn, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Green Park, Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge, South Kensington, Gloucester Road, Earl&#8217;s Court, Barons Court, Hammersmith, Turnham Green and Acton Town.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heathrow branch:<\/strong> from Acton Town, South Ealing, Northfields, Boston Manor, Osterley, Hounslow East, Hounslow Central, Hounslow West and Hatton Cross; services then serve Heathrow Terminal 4, Heathrow Terminals 2 &amp; 3 and Heathrow Terminal 5.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uxbridge branch:<\/strong> from Acton Town, Ealing Common, North Ealing, Park Royal, Alperton, Sudbury Town, Sudbury Hill, South Harrow, Rayners Lane, Eastcote, Ruislip Manor, Ruislip, Ickenham, Hillingdon and Uxbridge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Take care at Turnham Green:<\/strong> Piccadilly services stop there only during limited periods. Do not assume any Piccadilly train will call; check the journey for your departure time.<\/p>\n<p>When travelling west, <strong>check the destination before boarding<\/strong>: an Uxbridge train will not take you to Heathrow. Some trains also terminate before the ends of the line.<\/p>\n<h3>Which train should you take to Heathrow?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Terminal 5:<\/strong> look for a train destined for Heathrow Terminal 5.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Terminal 4:<\/strong> choose a service via Heathrow Terminal 4.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Terminals 2 and 3:<\/strong> use the shared Heathrow Terminals 2 &amp; 3 station. Check the route: a train via Terminal 4 calls there first and follows a different itinerary from a Terminal 5 service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Piccadilly line, Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express are different services. There is no single opening or closing time for the whole line. Consult <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/tube\/first-and-last-tube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TfL\u2019s first and last train information<\/a> for your journey and check <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/tube-dlr-overground\/status\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">disruptions and engineering works<\/a> before setting off.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday and Saturday nights, <strong>Night Tube operates between Cockfosters and Heathrow Terminal 5<\/strong>, serving Heathrow Terminals 2 &amp; 3. It does not serve the Uxbridge branch or Heathrow Terminal 4. TfL reports around 158 million journeys annually using its 2022 NUMBAT data; this is a dated reference, rather than a current annual total.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leicester Square and Covent Garden are close together.<\/strong> For a trip just between these two areas, compare walking with the time needed to reach the platform and leave the next station. Walking can be more practical, particularly if you are already at street level.<\/p>\n<p>The Piccadilly line shares stations with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metrolondres.es\/en\/lines\/district-line\/\">District line<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metrolondres.es\/en\/lines\/metropolitan-line\/\">Metropolitan line<\/a>, allowing connections to other routes. An interchange does not guarantee a step-free journey: check station accessibility if you are travelling with a wheelchair, pushchair or luggage that is difficult to carry.<\/p>\n<p>Its combination of underground and above-ground sections links central sights with residential areas across London.<\/p>\n<h3>New trains: what is planned?<\/h3>\n<p>TfL is upgrading the line and testing a new fleet with air conditioning and walk-through carriages. The published forecast is for the first trains to start entering passenger service <strong>between December 2026 and June 2027<\/strong>.
